Biggest Blessing in Our Lives
Though for seven years my husband and I never tried to prevent it, we never got pregnant. We didn't think anything of it, but when we decided we wanted a child, it was suggested that we just might have a problem achieving our goal.
Referred to the Regional Fertility Program, an endless battery of tests confirmed our fears - we could not have a child naturally. We also learned we would have to undergo genetic screening to determine if our only option would be adoption, a new possibility we could not have been prepared for.
Thankfully, the results were negative, so we moved forward with IVF and were advised to transfer only one embryo. Aware that most other couples transfer at least two, this made us nervous. Our chances seemed disappointingly slim.
The longest, most stressful weeks of our lives were those when we were waiting to find out if the embryo had implanted. In fact, we couldn't wait and I took an early pregnancy test. It was positive! Though he'd worked a night shift, I excitedly woke up my husband with the news. We were ecstatic! A little miracle was growing inside me.
MaKenna Elyse was born November 27, 2004. She has been the biggest blessing in our lives. And now, we are expecting a second blessing, again thanks to the miracles the doctors perform.
We are fortunate to have been able to pursue IVF and to have had such success with it. This is not so for everyone. The physical, mental, and financial stress is enormous. We hope that for others, at least the financial burden will be much less, so they can focus on their goal of becoming parents.
