As a citizen of Alberta, I strongly support the inclusion of financial assistance by the Alberta Ministry of Health and Wellness under the Alberta Health Care program for all fertility treatment for Albertans.

Every year, thousands of Albertans face the dilemma of being financially unable to pursue a family because of the high cost of fertility treatment. We feel that fertility treatment is no different that any other treatment and should be covered by our health care tax dollars.

I further believe that:

  • The prevalence and growing incidence of infertility in our population is a medical issue that demands the attention of our public health care system and should be placed on the agenda for funding.
  • The pursuit of natural conception through In Vitro Fertilization and other fertility treatment is not simply a matter of personal choice, but a matter of human rights and public health and wellness, and therefore of the future social and economic well-being of our province and society.
  • Fertility treatment, including In Vitro Fertilization, is a proven medical solution that is unfairly limited to those with the financial means to pursue it, and that it should receive significant coverage through the Alberta health care system as soon as possible.

It is long overdue that financial assistance for fertility treatment be offered to Albertans.
